Replacing the line that brings water into the house, or the one that takes waste out. It is the biggest job on this list and the one we do most.
When a water service needs replacing
Galvanised and older copper services fail from the outside in. You usually notice it as pressure that has quietly dropped over years, water that runs rusty first thing in the morning, or a wet patch in the lawn that never dries even in August. On a house built before the mid-seventies the service is often the original one, and once it starts weeping it does not stop.
How we do it
We locate the line, confirm where it runs and how deep, and agree the route before anything is opened. Most of the work is excavation and reinstatement rather than plumbing — which is why the crew that digs it is the crew that fixes it. New line, new shut-off, pressure tested, then the ground goes back in layers and gets compacted so it does not sink over the winter.
Sewer laterals
A sewer lateral fails differently. Clay and cast iron laterals crack, joints separate, and roots find the gap. You get repeat backups that clear for a month and come back. A camera tells us whether it is one bad joint that can be spot-repaired or a run that needs replacing, and we would rather show you the screen than talk you into the bigger job.
What it costs to think about
Every one of these is priced after we have seen it, in writing, before we start. Depth, length, what is on top of it — driveway, mature tree, a neighbour’s fence — and whether the municipality needs to be involved are what move the number. We will tell you which parts of that we control and which we do not.
